Are You Eligible for Medicare?

Medicare Eligibility: Who Qualifies?

You may be eligible for Medicare if you or your spouse have worked at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment and are 65 years old. Additionally, you must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.

If you are under 65, you may still qualify if you have a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).

Eligibility for Medicare Part A Without Premiums

You can receive Medicare Part A at age 65 without paying premiums if:

  • You already receive retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.

  • You are eligible for Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits but have not yet filed for them.

  • You or your spouse worked in Medicare-covered government employment.

If you are under 65, you can get Part A without paying premiums if:

  • You have received Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for 24 months.

  • You have kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Medicare Part B and Premium Payments

While Part A may be premium-free if you meet the qualifications, you must pay for Part B if you choose to enroll. The premium is:

  • Automatically deducted from Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement benefits.

  • Billed every three months if you do not receive these benefit payments.
