Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly known as Medigap, is offered by private insurance companies to help cover costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for, such as co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
With a Medigap policy, Medicare pays its share of approved healthcare costs, and then your Medigap policy covers its portion. Unlike Medicare Advantage Plans, which provide Medicare benefits, Medigap only supplements your Original Medicare coverage.
✅ You must have Medicare Part A and Part B.
✅ Medigap and Medicare Advantage Plans cannot be used together. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must leave it before starting Medigap coverage.
✅ You pay a monthly premium for Medigap in addition to your Medicare Part B premium.
✅ Medigap policies only cover one person. If both you and your spouse want coverage, you must purchase separate policies.
✅ Available through licensed insurers in your state.
✅ Guaranteed renewable, even if you develop health issues—your provider cannot cancel your policy as long as you continue paying your premium.
✅ No prescription drug coverage. Medigap policies sold after January 1, 2006, do not include prescription drug benefits. If you need drug coverage, you must enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
✅ It is illegal for someone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, unless you are switching back to Original Medicare.
